Sunfall is a Community Multiplayer game—it is meant to be played by groups of 10+ people.
Player characters level up on their own, but the whole community must work together to unlock new areas, defeat harder raid bosses, and ultimately save the land. Classes, abilities, and items help others in unique ways, so having a very diverse guild is the key to victory!
We have built Sunfall as an integration for Discord - the online home for gaming communities. The limitations of building a multiplayer game as a chatbot have guided us to build something very special, and allowed us to do it very quickly.
Only one person needs to add the game to a Discord server, and the everyone can immediately play the game. Nobody needs to download anything or make an account. The community’s social dynamics carry over into the game, community events bring the whole community together, and the single player mode gives everyone something to do between activities.
When the bot is added to a Discord server, it creates a community event channel and a quest board channel. The raid channel is used for playing community-wide multiplayer events which occur multiple times per day (scheduled by moderators). From the quest board, players can start single-player story levels, trade with vendors and change their equipment.
Play in Sunfall involves traversing text-based levels, customizing gear, talking to npcs, and fighting monsters. Combat uses a semi-turn-based, semi-quicktime style (think Pokemon and Undertale) that is both simple and engaging. The world is full of secrets and the monsters are dangerous. We hope that players will share strategies and secrets with each other to help their guilds thrive.
